The Orthotics & Prosthetics Center
What Are Orthotics and Prosthetics?
Orthotics is the field of medicine that deals with orthoses—braces or splints used to support, align, correct, or prevent deformities or to protect or improve the function of an injured or painful limb. These range from custom-fitted arch supports to braces for the knee, back, shoulder, or arm. Prosthetics refers to the use of artificial limbs, or prostheses, to replace those lost from birth or from disease or injury. They can include sports prostheses, myoelectric hands and arms, and customized devices for congenital and pediatric amputees.
Orthotists and prosthetists are certified healthcare professionals who have extensive training and experience in the design, fitting, and use of orthoses and prostheses. They also keep current with the latest advances in products, technology, and patient care.
One Size Does Not Fit All
When it comes to orthothoses and prostheses, one size definitely does not fit all. Patients referred to our Orthotics & Prosthetics (O&P) Center are thoroughly evaluated by a certified orthotist or prosthetist, who determines the optimal design for the type of device prescribed by the referring physician. In addition to taking all the necessary measurements and/or molds, they consult with the patient about his or her habits, lifestyle, goals, the extent of the disability, and any other factors that might affect the function of the device.
When the orthotic or prosthetic device is ready, the orthotist or prosthetist fits it to the patient, making any necessary adjustments to ensure optimal comfort and function. They also train the patient in how to wear, use, and care for the device. Our O&P specialists understand that adjusting to a new orthosis or prosthesis can be difficult and will always make time to see patients who are having problems.
A Full Range of Advanced O&P Services
At our O&P Center, an experienced and qualified multidisciplinary team of orthotists, prosthetists, physiatrists, and physical and occupational therapists work together to provide patients of all ages with comprehensive, compassionate, and individualized care. Our certified orthotists and prosthetists are experienced in treating hundreds of orthopaedic conditions using the most technologically advanced biomechanical instruments and products available. Our physical and occupational therapists help patients to maximize strength and muscle tone and to adapt to the demands of daily living with a new orthotic or prosthetic device.
Brace Yourself … for Relief
Orthotic bracing and splinting can be a highly effective component in the rehabilitation of sports-related conditions or injuries, such as fractures, torn knee ligaments, carpal tunnel syndrome, and lower back pain. We specialize in the fitting of customized and off-the-shelf knee, ankle, elbow, wrist, and lower back braces, and we keep a large selection on hand so we have them when you need them. Orthotic bracing is also a mainstay in treating orthopaedic diseases and disorders including osteoarthritis, cerebral palsy, polio, muscular dystrophy, spinal fractures, and spinal deformities such as scoliosis, kyphosis, and spina bifida.
Put Your Best Foot Forward
Disorders in foot structure or gait can cause or aggravate foot pain and other problems. Plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, metatarsalgia (soreness in the ball of the foot), Achilles tendonitis, lower back pain, and even osteoarthritis can often be managed with orthotic foot products. We offer a wide range of off-the-shelf products from the most reputable manufacturers, including arch supports, insoles, heel cups and pads, and orthopaedic shoes. When needed, we can provide custom foot orthotics made from a plaster cast of your foot. We also have expertise in orthotic care of the diabetic foot.
