The Surgery Center
An Effective, Convenient Alternative to Major Orthopaedic Surgery
The majority of patients who come to Southern Bone & Joint Specialists can be treated conservatively with non-surgical modalities like physical therapy or medication. When one of our specialists determines that surgery is needed to relieve pain or correct an orthopaedic condition, the Surgery Center can frequently provide a convenient and non-invasive alternative to invasive major surgery and lengthy hospital stays.
Outpatient surgery offers a number of benefits over the traditional hospital setting. In fact, there is a national trend toward outpatient surgery centers as physicians and patients become more aware of their benefits. Many of the less invasive procedures performed there are equally or more effective than major surgery, and provide the added benefits of:
- Reduced pain
- Less risk
- Shorter recovery time
- Lower cost
In many cases, only local anesthesia and a few stitches are needed, so you are able to return home quickly and get right back to work. The Surgery Center at Dothan has been providing the advantages of minimally invasive surgery for several years to people in the Wiregrass area.
We Specialize in the Use of Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques
Each member of our surgical staff has expertise in minimally invasive surgical techniques and the use of state-of-the-art equipment, such as fiber-optic lenses, microscopic cameras, high resolution monitors, and specialized scoping devices. Our Board-certified surgeons are performing more and more minimally invasive surgeries everyday to relieve orthopaedic pain due to degenerative joint disease, trauma, and especially, sports injuries. These include:
- Arthroscopic knee and rotator cuff surgery
- Carpal tunnel release
- Spine surgery for certain conditions, including simple lumbar dissectomies and cervical fusions
The Surgery Center Prides Itself on Patient Satisfaction
We are proud of our excellent patient satisfaction rating, which has consistently been in the 98th percentile for several years. We believe this is due to our emphasis on efficiency and cost effectiveness. The Surgery Center offers patients the personalized care of a small medical facility plus all of the advanced surgical resources and technology available at larger hospitals.
We strive to reduce the number of steps you must go through both prior to and on the day of service. For example, rather than having you come in before the day of surgery for the nursing and anesthesia assessment, we do it over the phone so you don’t have to take extra time off from work. On the day of surgery, we streamline the process to ensure that you get in and out in a timely fashion and not have to spend the entire day.
We also work with your insurance provider to obtain the best possible coverage. Our billing system is set up so that we can let you know the exact cost of your procedure well before the date of service. This is very helpful for patients who will have significant out-of-pocket expenses.
Looking to the Future
At the Surgery Center, our goal is to continue to provide the personalized care of a smaller medical center even as we expand to satisfy the medical needs of a growing patient population. Recently, we added another 5,000 square feet to the medical center and two 24-hour observation rooms for managing post-op pain in patients undergoing more invasive procedures.
