BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Josh Maddox is in practice at Southern Bone and Joint in the Enterprise / Dothan area. He is married to Niki Maddox, who specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Dothan. They have a son, Kurlin John Paul Maddox. He is proud to be working alongside his Dad, Jay Paul, his brother, Jeremiah and his sister, Ashley. He is trained in Sports Medicine, Joint Replacement, and is fellowship trained in minimally invasive and traditional Spine surgery. Josh attended Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine for Medical School in Dothan, AL. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency in Detroit, Michigan at Mclaren Orthopedic Surgery Residency (Michigan State University Residency), and his Spine Fellowship at Andrews Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, AL.

He grew up on a working farm just west of Dothan, where he developed a love for working with horses, and ultimately went on to train horses, compete in horse shows, and later rodeo. In 2010 he was ‘Rookie of the Year’ and made the finals in the steer wrestling event in the PCA Rodeo circuit. This was much more than an achievement to him, it was a stake in the ground, representing victory over a debilitating injury 10 years prior.

While attending Northview High School in Dothan, he was recruited to play football at Auburn University. His football career ended abruptly because of an injury which ultimately required 3 spine operations. He was told by multiple experts that he would suffer from back pain and major activity limitations his entire life. This was devastating news for him as an active 18-year-old. He attributes this decade-long trial as being one of the greatest struggles and ultimate victories in his life, teaching him how God can work through time, people, and medicine to heal us. Josh believes this journey set the stage for him to become a doctor and ultimately a surgeon who treats patients dealing with a variety of debilitating injuries.

Dr. Maddox went on to graduate from Samford University in Birmingham. While attending Samford, he developed an interest in acting and music and was cast as the lead in a production of ‘Godspell.’ This opportunity opened the doors for him to move to NYC, where he went on to complete a 2-year acting class and 1 year master class. During his years in NYC and Nashville, he performed on the local and National stage in everything from Off Broadway shows to National Television Films, Shows, Commercials and CMT music videos.

Despite his love for the arts, he felt unfulfilled pursuing it as a career and decided instead to pursue medicine. This decade long journey to medical school was a journey of personal growth, offering Josh a wealth of knowledge gained from years of rehabilitation. He became a student of many disciplines of healing including Physical Therapy, Dance, Karate, Jiu Jitsu, and Osteopathic Musculoskeletal Manipulation. He believes God laid out a path for him, strategically using these disciplines to collectively play a role in him becoming pain free. Josh would later come to understand that he was simultaneously being prepared to one day take care of people suffering with Orthopedic and Spine injuries.
