Southern Bone & Joint Specialists is proud to announce the arrival of advanced new MRI technology at our Dothan West location in the Granger Building, 345 Healthwest Drive. This investment represents our continued commitment to providing the Wiregrass with exceptional orthopedic care, advanced diagnostic capabilities, and a better overall patient experience.
Our new MRI system is designed to produce high-quality diagnostic images in less time, while giving patients more room, improved airflow, and greater comfort throughout their examination.
Advanced Imaging Designed Around the Patient
Magnetic resonance imaging, commonly known as MRI, gives physicians detailed images of the body without using X-rays or ionizing radiation. It can provide valuable information about bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and other soft tissues.
An MRI may be used to help evaluate:
- Sports-related injuries
- Joint pain and swelling
- Ligament and tendon injuries
- Back and neck conditions
- Shoulder, knee, hip, hand, foot, and ankle problems
- Other orthopedic injuries or conditions
These detailed images help our orthopedic specialists better understand the source of a patient’s symptoms and determine the most appropriate next step in treatment.
Less Time in the Scanner
One of the most important advantages of our new MRI technology is its ability to capture high-quality images in less time.
The length of an MRI examination will still depend on the area being evaluated and the images requested by the physician. However, more efficient scanning can mean less time inside the machine and a more convenient experience for the patient.
A Larger, More Comfortable Design
We understand that some patients feel nervous or uncomfortable about having an MRI, particularly those who dislike confined spaces.
Our new MRI features a larger, more spacious design that provides additional room inside the scanner. The goal is to help patients feel more relaxed and comfortable without compromising the image quality their physician needs.
Our experienced imaging team will explain the process, position each patient as comfortably as possible, and remain available throughout the examination.
Enhanced Airflow and Personal Comfort
The new system also includes internal fans that provide improved airflow during the scan. This enhanced ventilation can help patients remain cooler and more comfortable throughout the procedure. While it may seem like a small detail, greater airflow can make a meaningful difference in the overall MRI experience.
Your Music, Your Way
Patients can also listen to their favorite music during the examination. A customized playlist can provide a welcome distraction from the sounds of the MRI machine and help create a calmer, more personalized environment. It is another way Southern Bone & Joint Specialists is working to make advanced diagnostic imaging more patient-friendly.
What Patients Can Expect
Before the examination, our imaging team will explain the procedure and provide any necessary preparation instructions. Because MRI uses a powerful magnetic field, patients should notify the team about implanted medical devices, prior surgeries, or metal that may be present in the body.
Patients will be asked to remove jewelry and other metal objects before lying on the padded examination table. During the scan, the machine will make a series of tapping or knocking sounds while the images are being captured.
Patients must remain as still as possible, but they will be able to communicate with the MRI technologist throughout the examination.
