This week’s #featureFriday patient is Mr. Larry Sowell. He is an electrician and has worked full time at a local medical facility for the last 20 years and also preaches at Pleasant Hill Free Will Baptist Church in Headland, AL. After being diagnosed with sarcoma in his left arm in 1997, he began chemo and radiation treatments, injections and surgery, but ultimately underwent forequarter amputation (the removal of his arm, scapula and clavicle). Although Larry has been faced with several obstacles in his life, he has refused to give up.
Larry has been meeting with our Prosthetic team at SBJS for the last 2 years. When we first met Larry, he had poor posture and could not tolerate anything touching his residual limb, but after some trial and error and some creativity, Brandon from our Prosthetic department came up with a training tool. Larry wore what they affectionately refer to as “his turtle shell” which helped him adjust to the friction and pressure of a potential forequarter prosthesis. They slowly began adding weights to the shell for Larry to build up his muscles again with the goal of tolerating the weight of a prosthesis. While Larry was building his muscles, with his shell and at the gym, Brandon was busy custom-building his myoelectric forequarter prosthetic, an externally powered artificial limb controlled with the electrical signals generated naturally by Larry’s own muscles.
The photos seen in the comments show a snapshot of the the journey and this video is from the day Larry was issued the finished product. Larry will continue to meet with Brandon and Lisa at SBJS to make any necessary adjustments so he can maximize the use of his new arm. We are thankful to be part of this journey with Larry. He is truly inspiring! #southernbone ... See MoreSee Less

Larry is a wonderful and generous person. Though I retired from Medical Center more than two years ago, I recall asking Larry to provide spiritual support to several patients and he eagerly did so, often continuing these relationships long after the patients’ discharge.
